It was recently announced that Hancock Health received an A rating for hospital safety in fall of 2020 from The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health system. This is the third consecutive A rating that Hancock has received, demonstrating their prioritization of patient safety and responsiveness, as well as communication with and between doctors and nurses.

Quality of Care in Your Hospital Safety

“We are proud of the work our team does to ensure the highest quality of care for our patients,” said Steve Long, President & CEO, Hancock Health. “This hospital safety grade from The Leapfrog Group recognizes our commitment to continuously improve our safety standards, from promoting hand hygiene to reducing infections and preventing harm.”

Hancock Health was one of only 11 hospitals in Indiana to receive an A rating for fall 2020. Within the Central Indiana area, Hancock Health is just one of two A-rated hospitals, along with Major Health Partners Medical Center of Shelbyville.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Survey

The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization that strives to move the needle forward in healthcare safety, quality and affordability. They work to promote transparency in national data collection and public reporting initiatives. The Leapfrog Hospital Survey is a trusted and transparent tool in which nearly 2,000 hospitals voluntarily annually participate, free of charge.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade measures up to 28 performance metrics from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, its own Leapfrog Group survey and other supplemental data. These performance metrics are then broken into two categories: process and outcomes.

Process metrics include such factors as medication administration, ICU staffing, nursing workforce, hand hygiene, risk mitigation and staff responsiveness. Outcomes metrics include falls and trauma, surgical inpatient death rate, post-op respiratory failure rate, healthcare-acquired infections and accidental puncture/laceration rates.

Hancock is Committed to You

Hancock Health also received the highest score in both the spring and fall 2020 reports for effective leadership, staff working together and tracking/reducing risks to patients. One area that the Leapfrog Group previously marked for improvement was patient falls, and Hancock has already implemented changes to improve fall rates since the survey was conducted.

All of these metrics send a clear message: Hancock Health is committed to the good health and safety of every person whose life they touch. And as the sixth healthiest county in Indiana for 2020, the Greenfield community has continued to show their trust in the Hancock Network throughout this incomparably challenging year.
