Before You Celebrate, Know Your Local Fireworks Regulations

Greenfield Indiana Fireworks

It’s summertime again in Greenfield, which means that Fourth of July festivities are just around the corner! This year, however, there will be some changes in how residents celebrate due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Celebrations with huge crowds and fireworks may be postponed or even cancelled, leaving Hoosiers wondering what they can do to safely commemorate Independence Day. Some may choose to have a quiet holiday, while others may opt for an at-home fireworks demonstration.

In Indiana, the purchase and use of fireworks is legal as long as certain laws are abided by. Below, you will find a consolidated list of these laws so that you can ensure your use of fireworks is fun, safe and legal.

  1. Fireworks are allowed statewide every day from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., although these times can be subject to local laws and can be changed by city ordinance. From June 29 to July 9, however, statewide law allows firework use from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset (roughly 11:15 p.m.) and this time frame cannot be shortened by the city. Some cities may extend this time frame. Greenfield extends the date of this noise ordinance to July 11.
  2. Fines for violating noise ordinances can range from $50 to $300, depending on the city.
  3. Residents must be over age 18 to purchase fireworks and children may only use fireworks in the presence of an adult.
  4. Fireworks safety is important and should be taken into account before use. Only purchase fireworks from an authorized dealer and store them in a cool, dry place. Never aim fireworks at anybody else and keep a safe distance when lighting. Never attempt to relight fireworks and always have a fire extinguisher or water supply nearby.

The Fourth of July can be a great time to celebrate, but consumer safety should be a top priority when using fireworks at home. Many residents may choose at-home celebrations this year, so make sure to follow local laws to maximize your family’s fun and safety this holiday!
